The unmet need

A critical gap in glaucoma care

Glaucoma is the second leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide. Despite decades of research, the standard of care leaves patients without the continuous visibility and responsive management their condition demands.

The moments that matter most in glaucoma are precisely the ones that current care cannot capture. Lumen BioMedical intends to change that.

90%
of glaucoma-related blindness is estimated to be preventable with earlier and more accurate intervention
50%+
non-compliance rate with prescribed therapy — the primary treatment in use today
<1%
of a patient's disease-relevant data is captured by standard clinic visits each year

Monitoring is episodic

Disease-relevant changes occur outside clinic hours. Standard care captures a single data point, not the continuous pattern that drives progression.

Therapy relies on patients

Daily self-administered drops are the primary intervention. In real-world practice, non-compliance is widespread and largely invisible to physicians.

A proven category precedent

Continuous monitoring transformed diabetes care. Lumen BioMedical intends to apply that same principle to glaucoma — sustained visibility, responsive management.

What we are building

A wearable closed system for glaucoma management

Lumen BioMedical is developing a wearable system designed to give physicians continuous clinical visibility and give patients responsive care, without surgery, without hospital visits, and without lifestyle change.

For patients

A wearable system that works continuously without requiring daily patient action, providing protection and care around the clock including during the hours when the disease is most active.

For physicians

A connected clinical platform intended to provide treating physicians with continuous patient data and timely alerts, enabling proactive decisions without waiting for the next scheduled visit.

For the health system

A platform designed to reduce the downstream burden of unmanaged glaucoma progression including vision loss, surgical intervention, and the long-term care costs that preventable blindness creates.

The opportunity

The first company to bridge this gap wins a category

Decades of academic research have validated the scientific foundation. The barrier has never been the underlying science. It has been the regulatory, clinical, and manufacturing infrastructure to bring a solution to patients. That is the gap Lumen BioMedical intends to close.

The platform

A wearable closed system for glaucoma management

Lumen BioMedical is developing a proprietary wearable system designed to be worn like a conventional contact lens while delivering a level of clinical management that no current device or therapy can provide.

Intended capability

Continuous visibility for patients and physicians

Glaucoma is a disease that demands continuous attention, yet current care provides only episodic snapshots. The Lumen BioMedical system is being designed to provide uninterrupted clinical visibility throughout the day and night, capturing the data that drives disease management decisions and making it available to the treating physician in a format that enables timely, informed action.

The system will be designed for wear like a conventional contact lens, requiring no surgery, no implantation, and no hospitalization. Patients will carry on with daily life while the system works continuously.

What the system is intended to address

The monitoring gap

Disease-relevant pressure changes occur outside clinic hours. The system will be designed to provide continuous measurement where episodic tonometry cannot reach.

The compliance gap

Non-compliance with self-administered therapy is the leading predictor of disease progression in treated patients. The system will be designed to address this without requiring patient action.

The visibility gap

Treating physicians currently have no mechanism to monitor patients between visits. The system will be designed to give clinicians continuous, actionable clinical data.

Intended connected care model
1
Continuous measurement
The wearable system monitors throughout the wear period without patient action
2
Physician notification
Data is intended to be available to the treating physician via a connected clinical platform
3
Responsive management
The system is designed to respond when management is needed, without waiting for a scheduled appointment
Intended capability

Remote physician visibility

The Lumen BioMedical platform is intended to give treating physicians a level of clinical visibility that is not available through any existing tool — continuous patient data accessible via a connected physician platform, with the ability to act when patient status changes between visits.

The platform will be designed for integration with major electronic health record systems, so that patient data flows into the clinical workflow physicians already use.

A companion patient application will be designed to keep patients informed and engaged with their own management, without presenting clinical complexity beyond what is useful and safe for a patient audience.

Intended capability

Responsive therapeutic management

A central design goal of the Lumen BioMedical system is to remove the patient compliance variable from glaucoma management. Rather than depending on daily patient action for therapeutic delivery, the system is intended to respond when management is needed — automatically, without requiring the patient to initiate anything.

This design approach draws directly from the precedent established in diabetes care, where closing the loop between monitoring and treatment produced a step change in patient outcomes. Lumen BioMedical intends to bring that same paradigm to glaucoma.

  • Designed to respond without requiring patient initiation
  • Physician-defined management parameters
  • Management events intended to be logged to the physician platform
  • Patient companion app provides visibility without clinical complexity

The diabetes care precedent

Closed-loop insulin delivery transformed Type 1 diabetes management by automating the monitoring-to-treatment response. Lumen BioMedical intends to apply the same principle to ocular disease management — a system that monitors continuously and responds when action is needed, without depending on patient memory or adherence.

The specific technology, materials, and mechanisms underlying the Lumen BioMedical platform are proprietary. Technical details are available to qualified partners and investors under a signed non-disclosure agreement.

Our mission

Building what glaucoma patients and physicians have needed for decades

The scientific foundation for a better approach to glaucoma management has been established by academic researchers around the world. What has been missing is an organization purpose-built to translate that foundation into a safe, regulated, and commercially viable solution for patients.

The clinical need

Glaucoma demands more than current care provides

Glaucoma affects more than 57 million people worldwide and is projected to reach 112 million by 2040. It is the second leading cause of irreversible blindness globally, and it progresses silently. Patients typically lose significant peripheral vision before noticing any change.

The disease's progression is driven by pressure that fluctuates continuously, peaks when patients are away from clinical care, and responds inadequately to therapies that depend entirely on patient self-administration. No current non-surgical device or system addresses all three of these realities simultaneously.

The monitoring gap

Disease-relevant pressure changes occur outside clinic hours. Current care provides a data point where a continuous record is needed.

The compliance gap

Non-compliance with self-administered therapy is the single largest predictor of progression in treated patients and is largely invisible to treating physicians.

The equity gap

Glaucoma carries documented disparities in both prevalence and care access across underserved populations. A wearable management system designed for autonomous management reduces the frequency of clinic attendance required for effective disease control.

Our approach

How Lumen BioMedical will be built

What follows describes the principles and approach that will guide development — commitments made now, as foundational disciplines of the program.

Planned approach

Regulatory strategy first

Lumen BioMedical will establish its regulatory pathway and classification before committing any capital to engineering or prototype development. Every design decision will be made with the regulatory submission in mind, not retrofitted to it afterward.

Planned approach

Quality by design

The development program will be built from the outset around an ISO 13485 compliant quality management system. Design controls, document management, and risk management will be established from the first day of engineering activity, not added before submission.

Planned approach

Clinical evidence by design

Clinical advisors will shape device design inputs from the earliest stages of the program. The pivotal study design will be agreed with regulatory authorities before enrollment begins, ensuring the evidence generated is the evidence required for clearance and reimbursement.

Health equity commitment

Reaching the patients who need it most

Glaucoma carries well-documented disparities in both prevalence and care access. Lumen BioMedical's commercial model will incorporate community health center partnerships and patient accessibility programs as a founding commitment, not an afterthought added after launch.

Community health center access

Distribution through community health centers will be built into the commercial model as a parallel channel alongside academic and group-practice partners.

Patient accessibility program

Patient assistance and affordability programs will be designed into the commercial launch plan, not introduced reactively.

Access as a performance metric

Demographic and geographic uptake will be tracked as a standing commercial performance indicator from launch.
